I believe the most interesting character on the show is the one and only Robin Scherbatsky. Robin is a “scotch-drinking, cigar-smoking, gun-toting Canadian pop-star-turned-journalist-turned-morning-show-host”. She was brought onto the show when she began to date Ted at the start of the series. Things were complicated between them for a while, but eventually they dated for a year. During that time she became very close with the gang, especially Lily, so when Ted and Robin broke up she didn’t disappear from the series but stayed around holding her own with the gang.
Robin had a different childhood growing up because her father wanted her to be a boy; therefore her middle name was chosen to be Charles. Her father also forced her into hockey; eventually he finds her kissing a boy and Robin then moved in with her mother. Her father is the main reason she enjoys drinking scotch, shooting guns, and smoking cigars.
Those attributes that her character beholds allowed her to form a close relationship with Barney, which would slowly turn into a romance that neither of them could deny. Barney and Robin together changed the shape of each other’s characters, allowing Barney to be more open to having a girlfriend and staying with one person for an extended period of time (not just a one night stand) and Robin just have a serious relationship without having to worrying about breaking up because the man wanted to get married.
Personally, I think Robin is the hard head of the group. She stands by her country (Canada) no matter what anyone says especially Barney. She also puts her career ahead of anything else, but she still dates multiple guys on the show all ending up with her not being able to commit.
